Elements of a lab report

1. Title- Should be an easy-to-read line that informs the reader what they will be looking at. This lets researchers see fast what they are looking for. Has to be specific.

2. Abstract- This part is a summary of the entire report. Each section summarized is limited to a few sentences. This allows readers to see whether they want to read your report or not. Includes what discoveries you made.

3. Introduction- Should explain why the study is important, present research done before the experiment which establishes its significance. Identify your audience. You also state your hypothesis in this section.

4. Materials and Methods- describe every material you used and how you used it. This section lets the reader see that all the steps you took were appropriate, and that it could be replicated. Make sure to describe everything you did chronologically.

5. Results- All the data collected is shown here. Make sure to present the results in such a way that the audience can be convinced. This section needs to be well organized. Do not explain the results or data in this section.

6. Discussion- You explain all your data and results. You argue whether or not your hypothesis was supported. Present your most important discoveries. You can use your references to explain the results.

7. Conclusion- Summarize the report, findings, and explain the purpose of the experiment once again. This will be the last chance to persuade the audience. Do not introduce new ideas.

8. References- All the references used should be cited properly. It’s up to the instructor which style they want.
